You have no control on the train. You are at the mercy of someone else, something else as a multitude of factors come together to say whether your trip will be quick or drag on for an eternity. Whenever she is riding he hopes for the delays, a trouble on the line that will give him more time to talk about the weather or politics or books, whatever keeps her melodic voice in his ears. When she is not on board, he hopes for the quick trips, ending just after they start. You don’t always get what you hope for.
