It was a dog walker that found the body. Isn’t that always the way? You can picture the scene, can’t you. She gets up, jokingly tells the yipping mongrel to have patience while she dresses, then out the door they go, the leash at full stretch even though the dog has nowhere to go. And then sniffing, followed by an innocent, “What have you found down there?” And suddenly the dark underbelly of the quiet village is revealed, the sole policeman is called, and the investigation begins. Prepare your magnifier and your bucket of red herrings, there’s a mystery afoot.
