Cal didn’t bother with the sidewalk. Why should he? Sure, some person had already driven down the road, but not quickly. With all the trees around, being in the clearer part of the path was the most sensible. And Cal was, if anything, sensible. That’s why he sold his car and walked everywhere. Fuel was expensive, and so were random repairs. Why saddle himself with that sort of financial anchor around his neck. He had to admit it was a lot easier to be high and mighty about that sort of thing when you weren’t freezing your tail off, though.
