Desiree told him he needed a vacation, and she was right as usual. His last gig had been the worst yet—broken strings, the falling amp, boos and jeers that still wake him in the middle of the night, sweating and panicked, looking for the exit. “Go to the beach,” she told him, “It’s the farthest thing from this.” He strolled down the uneven steps and realized she wasn’t exactly right. As the waves crashed and the wind whistled its gentle tune he could hear in the sounds the applause he missed, that long-gone praise, and he reveled in it.
