"The stairway's melting again," I said. I heard the scrape of her chair as she stood, listened to her light footsteps pit-patting to stand beside me. "They've been doing that a lot lately, haven't they?" She looked up at me, not even an iota of concern present in her deeply stoned eyes. Her whole face had that relaxed Buddha calmness. I looked at the stairs again. "I feel like I'm melting too." She leaned out over the railing, a little too far for my liking. Her feet lifted, but she was balanced across her hips perfectly. "Maybe we both are."
