The café was brightly lit. Too brightly, to sam's eyes. He'd come in to get a cup of coffee and to think. The coffee was black, and so were his thoughts. He was thinking about a dame that had come into his office last week, asking for help finding her missing husband. She came home from the grocery store to find his car gone, but his watch still on the bedside table. She'd given him that watch. He never left home without it. He noted tan lines on the wrist of the man in the next booth. But no watch.
