Mining has been in Jeb’s blood for generations, they said. But that didn’t change the fact that every time he considered the mine—cramped conditions, air polluted with coal dust, and the fact that the miners were several hundred feet underground—his heart raced while he fought to catch his breath. So, it was a life of accountancy for him, safely on the surface, the only crushing danger the pile of paperwork that still waited for his attention. Until the collapse, that is. Once he heard the news, his ancestral legacy took over, and Jen prepared himself for the search.
