Rain whispered on the window as Mae slid into the booth, heart drumming louder than the café's hum. She hadn’t seen Jules in five years. Two mugs sat waiting—hers still steaming, his already stirred. A tiny vase held a single plant stem, awkwardly elegant. Jules arrived breathless, smiling like no time had passed. “I remembered you liked mornings quiet,” he said. Mae reached for her cup, hands brushing his. Warm. Real. They spoke in fragments, laughter mending the distance. Outside, the storm softened. Inside, something stirred—small, fragile, green. Hope, perhaps. Or forgiveness. Either way, it was growing.
