Alex’s shoes and trouser bottoms were wet, but it would be worth it to see that he got the better of Uncle Gene. The search sounds mixed strangely in the pipe so he couldn’t judge their direction. He wondered how long it would take them to find him this year. Alex turned and tried to look down the tunnel into the blackness. Without warning, fear of the unknown overwhelmed him and he had to flee. He raced from the darkness and plunged into the creek. “You call that hiding?” Uncle Gene laughed, pulling him from the water. “I’VE FOUND HIM!”
