“The ocean is skittish. See how it keeps running away every time comes closer?” He was squatting next to me, his face completely earnest in that way I later learned meant he was ‘engaging in gratuitous make-believe.’ “Oh yeah, like it’s afraid we’ll laugh at how it sings,” I said. He fixed me with a funny look, then smiled. “Exactly. Now, what you have to do is sneak up on it and pounce. Once you have sand pinned under your feet it can’t get away. Got it?” I nodded. He smiled and booped my nose. “Let’s catch ourselves an ocean.”
