The wall of pottery and other cool things that his grandmother had in her house had been his emotional safe place. John used to stand in her kitchen perusing the shelves looking at the various nooks and crannies that were full of beautiful cups and vases, ink wells and candle stick holders. It was her entire life story and it was her whole culture in one place. She had lived in this country for six decades at this point, but she still found space for her roots. Anyone who looked at that wall knew who she was in mere minutes.
