Walter sipped his coffee and drew in a deep breath. He let it out slowly, his exhalation adding to the mist that clung to the lake’s surface. “This is heaven on earth,” he said softly. He heard footsteps swishing through the grass behind him and smiled. Hattie slipped into the chair next to him, her own coffee mug steaming up her glasses as she took a sip. “They’ll be here in two hours.” The peace would soon be broken with the welcome cacophony of giddy childhood. He reached over and took her hand. “That will be heaven, too,” he said.
