The water wheel’s damp timbers glistened with eternal wetness. The water still poured from the pipe though its movement was frozen. “This would explain things,” Lowell muttered. He scanned the surroundings for the cause of his bother. “You have my attention now.” The bushes parted. He saw three gnomes, one with a face scrunched in concentration, the other two marching forward. “We have need of your aid, tinker,” said one. At that moment his companion let out a gasp and fell to his knees. The wheel began to spin again. “The kettle should work now,” said Lowell. “Come in. Explain.”
