joeislove's 100-word story for May 30, 2026

The windmill bird hides in plain sight. Its tail feathers have evolved over time to closely mimic the gigantic buildings it hides among. There are ways to spot them, if you know how to look for the clues. The easiest, of course, is to go inside the buildings where they perch. People do not build windmills for decoration, but those buildings have no shafts turning gears that are driving generators or grinding grain into flour. But approach them from their downwind sides and you start to recognize faces. Those surprised eyes are dead giveaways. Not to mention the forehead feathers.
