Perimeter checks are always a grab-bag. Sometimes I find nothing. Sometimes I find a spot where a breach was attempted, marked by the retreating line of spilled blood. But this time was different. I stared at the tiny red elephant toy and my brain struggled to assign meaning to it. Was it a message? A gift? Whoever put it there clearly wanted to rattle us, taunt us. I considered bringing it back with me for analysis, but decided against it. Who knew what it contained. I reached out and flicked it off the post. That’s the last thing I remember.
