magisternihil's 100-word story for June 21, 2026

The hanging plant in Ms. Abernathy’s lesson room can tell when you haven’t practiced. At least that’s what she tells her piano students. “Oh, now look at that. You’ve gone and made Claude sad,” she says, caressing the plant’s hanging leaves as though consoling it. Or, sometimes, it’s, “Yes, I agree totally, Claude, she really has been doing her homework,” and she has her student give the plant a gentle high-five on its leaves. It’s a trick, of course. Claude can’t tell if you’ve practiced. He CAN tell if you’ve flossed, though, so don’t think you’re getting away with skipping.
