At midday, we'd usually row back in, not all the way to port, but to the little grotto at the base of the cliff. Just the first calm place you could find away from the pitching of the surf, a place to select something from the day's catch and slice it up for a quick lunch. After we ate the freshest sashimi it is possible to eat, along with some pickled vegetables from our lunchboxes, the captain would pull his headscarf over his eyes and announce that it was nap time. He reminded me of a cat, curled up there.
