joeislove's 100-word story for May 26, 2025

We raised cows when I was a kid. Not many: a herd of maybe 15 at its largest. Ours didn't have ear tags. We named them all, like they were pets. I suppose you might think that would make it harder to send them off to be sold for slaughter. But a couple times a year we would load a couple up on a trailer and send them away to auction. That's why we were raising them, after all. They weren't pets, even though they had names. If there were more of them, maybe we'd have given them ear tags.
