She's not hissing. Or... well, she is, but she's not being mean. She thinks that's how you greet someone you like. She was already doing it by the time she showed up on our doorstep during that rainstorm and demanded to be let in. I didn't want to let the dripping wet hissing monster in, but my wife is a soft touch and from that night, Noodle lived with us. We think she must have been raised by snakes; hissing is just hello for her. She'll hiss, then curl up with you, hiss again, and fall asleep. All while purring.
