Her grandmother was a Selkie. At least, that was what Amanda always told everybody, including herself, to soften the pain of losing her when she was only five. Grandmother was special to Amanda. She distinctly remembered when the night never ended, she would pillow Grandmother’s gentle lap, felt her safe hands caressing her pearly, loose waves, and hear her stories of the dark North Sea and mythical creatures that called it home. Mid-summer’s Eve. Amanda turned eighteen. As usual, she strolled by the shore. She saw a seal standing up from the waters. A wave hit. An old woman appeared.
