Hide's 100-word story for June 5, 2025

Hide wrote the following micro-story on Hectalex on June 5, 2025. Each story on Hectalex is inspired by a daily visual prompt and must be exactly 100 words.

“She died.” Ava wouldn’t look at me. “I know,” I say, almost putting my hand on her shoulder before hesitating. “I didn’t remember her much anyways” she said. Her voice was too flat for a child’s. “It’s better that way,” I say. “The daughter of a selkie could never be happy, even with her mother.” We had watched the “scientists” drag the bloody pinnipeal carcass from the pier. The skin was too loose in some places, like she had been changing. That’s the only time my ex-wife was good at changing. I’m not telling Ava how they found her either.
