I let the kayak drift as I took a sip of water and then unrolled the dry bag, fetching the little parcel I had brought all this way. This was the same time of day, same season, same place where I first met her. I could still see the determined look on her face as she paddled toward where I floundered next to my overturned kayak, in a panic. "Don't worry, I won't let you go," she said, then helped me get my kayak righted. Watching her ashes drift away, I realized I finally had to let her go instead.
