From the roof, streetlights on the horizon were jewels on velvet. Patrick hadn't seen them like this since he was eight, riding with his father to clean truck stops. Someone else's life. Might as well have been. He'd dream about flying out of the truck bed, over the tops of those lights like Peter Pan. Leaving Florida was supposed to mark a new life. He walked into the VA hospital, sat down in the endocrinologist's office -- the woman sneered at him. "Don't know if you heard, but I don't have to help trannies anymore." Tonight, he was going to fly.
