The hat completed the wish, sure, but it was the wish itself, made by those children that truly brought him to life. He went with the hat thing because every magical being knows instinctively that revealing your true weakness was the quickest way to become a tool for evil-doing. And they seemed so protective of him, worrying about that hat, that he thought everything would be alright. But he was a winter creature. No one warned him it didn’t last forever. You would think waiting was the hard part, but watching your body slowly melt and evaporate was far worse.
