magisternihil's 100-word story for June 30, 2025

magisternihil wrote the following micro-story on Hectalex on June 30, 2025. Each story on Hectalex is inspired by a daily visual prompt and must be exactly 100 words.

All of the houses in this neighborhood were cookie cutter versions of all the others, and I just wanted to make mine different. And then I come home to discover my neighbor decided to be different just like me. Granted, she went with purple, but still. Now we were two colorful houses, just like each other. When the others joined in I threw in the towel. Now everyone was different just like everyone else, completely missing the point. The neighborhood is much brighter now, though, I’ll admit. Still, I think I’ll paint my house back to white to stand out.
