joeislove's 100-word story for April 12, 2025

joeislove wrote the following micro-story on Hectalex on April 12, 2025. Each story on Hectalex is inspired by a daily visual prompt and must be exactly 100 words.

"And it's just been tied up there? For how long?" "Couple weeks, the neighbor said." We had already looked inside, hesitant at what we might find. But it was empty. Unmade bunks, uneaten breakfast on a couple tin plates in the galley. Pot of coffee long grown cold atop a stove that had, as far as we could tell, just burned until it ran out of fuel. Worst part, the registration numbers had been scraped off, so no one was even sure where the boat had even come from. "Shit," I said, gazing into the creeping fog, "I hate these."
