Lilah dreamt of leaving every night until all the dreams fused, fueled by the anxious, desperate churn of her daily thoughts. She was a robot at Starbucks, pushing the burnt-espresso drug to burnt-out drones whose slavery was fueled by her own. Paul didn't -- or didn't want to -- understand that it was already bad enough in America and was absolutely going to get worse, people had already been 'disappeared,' murdered, imprisoned. Registries invented to warn disabled people to shut up about resources they'd never had and would now never receive. But Paul wasn't autistic, Black or brown, and he wasn't trans.
