John Ford would have loved our room in the little Tuscan villa. He would, however, have wanted a cowboy standing on the roof outside, but I liked the view of the terracotta tiles unblemished by the icons of the Old West. She usually liked to nap a bit longer than I did in the afternoon, so I often sat alone, staring out the window, sipping a tiny glass of Vin Santo and nibbling on almond biscotti while listening to her gentle snoring. I will spend the rest of my life missing this view, that afternoon wine, those biscotti. And her.
