"They're grounding," she said, because she thought he was stupid, because she softened blows, because truth was a hammer and her weapon of choice was the dried petals of flowers. "You know how I sometimes feel like I'm going to float away." They walked, gathered rocks; she deposited hers into her pockets. He flung his away. "You're not helping." "I'm trying. I've always tried." "Not the way I needed you to." The sun became a white searchlight and bleached the sunset. Heavy, she waded in. He wanted to help her the way that she needed. So he let her go.
