It was my first time skiing—a birthday present from my friend’s family who lived in Utah. The powdered snow that day was perfect for a complete beginner like me. I started small, on the bunny hill, then after a morning of dedicated practice, I worked my way up my first blue-coded hill. There was a group skiing down right in front of me, so I decided to steer right. Little did I know that way was black coded. The trees were a maze. I skied straight down and forgot how to break. People were cheering. I was screaming inside.
