The bench remembers when it was installed, how the people loved it. It had been many things in its time: support for winded joggers, a quiet spot for shy couples to steal a kiss, a barricade in a snowball war to end all snowball wars. A man once made it his home until the police drove him away. Another man had drawn his last breath here, his hand clutching his arm. So many things, good and bad, had happened on its slats. In the morning it will be replaced with one of those plastic monstrosities. The end of an era.
