They never really planted anything in the brick planter. No one was sure who had planted the flowers originally, but the hardiest survivors kept popping up there every Spring. It was as if they were daring the world to count them out. I don't remember what kind of flowers they were. She would have remembered. I didn't really think about how much I relied on her to feed me little facts like that until it was too late. I keep coming back here too, to this bench, this planter, these resilient little flowers. Daring the world to count me out.
