It would have been cheaper to demolish the whole thing and build a new one from scratch, but Miriam wouldn't even discuss it. She insisted that we restore the old hotel to its former glory ourselves. She spent hours lovingly matching tile, learning to spin new balusters on a lathe, finding just the right carpets.... Oh well, I thought, it is her inheritance, after all. So we moved in to this haunted money pit. And it grew on me. Sure the walls bleed and the ghosts keep me up at night, but Miriam's happiness is worth enduring a few nuisances
