Sometimes in my dreams the sounds of the city still crash over me, the cacophony of life congested, and then I wake in a new world. The screaming of the taxi drivers is now the call of the kingfisher, the blaring of horns now the honk of the geese knocking their beaks at the duck hatch for oats, the thrum of traffic now the gentle thump of the hull against the towpath. I open my eyes to the glare of the neon, now the sun through the porthole caressing my eyes into the day, and swear I’ll never go back
