joeislove's 100-word story for August 9, 2025

I haven’t been here for years. A thin layer of dust covers everything. Spiders have taken over the entire living room. The kitchen, though, still resonates with the memories of a childhood spent shelling peas, canning beans, and listening to lies and fables. Tales and warnings from the mountains. Gossip and whispering accusations from church. My memory of this time is fragmented at best, a kaleidoscope of pain and wonder. Bits of happiness overshadowed and obscured by the darker things I have forgotten for a reason. I sigh and drop my bags on the floor. No way out but through.
