magisternihil's 100-word story for August 30, 2025

magisternihil wrote the following micro-story on Hectalex on August 30, 2025. Each story on Hectalex is inspired by a daily visual prompt and must be exactly 100 words.

Ned was a cautious man, and installed all of the protective devices in his car that he could the moment he bought it. Sure, it came with air bags and all that stuff the car manufacturers focus on, but not important things. Where is the wood? How in the hell are you supposed to knock wood? He attached a block of oak firmly to his dashboard. Also a protective crystal and dream catcher hung from his rear view, and the car still, to this day, smells of sage. He still refuses to explain the back-up-bear, but he swears by it.
