We were desperately trying to save that tree. We spread fertilizer around it and ran a water hose out to it for drip watering. It felt like we were making offerings to a god who refused to acknowledge us. The tree was older than I was, and sometimes I thought maybe it was just tired. I definitely have days like that. The world is moving around me and I just want to lie down and have a sleep. Or maybe it's dying of loneliness. Single tree in the middle of a meadow like that, with only grass to talk to.
