“So this all used to be ice?” asked Tommy, his eyes wide with imagining. “Well, snow mostly,” answered his uncle, Dennis. “These gondolas used to take people to the top, and then they would slide down on these long things called skis.” “And it was cold? Like colder than the river cold?” Dennis sighed. The “cold” river was eighty degrees on a good day. “You used to exhale and see your breath frozen on the air.” He looked down at his nephew’s sad face. “Hey, tell you what, when we get to the to top we’ll make a grassman, okay?”
