I spend a lot of time watching the sea. I mean, it's my job, of course, but I've always watched the sea. I suppose it was my fate to become a lighthouse keeper. The solitary man in the tower, scanning the horizon for ships. Warning them away from the rocky coast. At night, making sure the light is bright enough to be seen for miles. Stay away, I warn. Do not approach. Anyone who gets close to me risks disaster. I watch the sea, but I know that the ship I truly long to see will never reappear. She's gone.
